What does BIPOC mean and why does it matter?
BIPOC is a term - most notably dating back to 2013 - which stands for “Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.” It is considered "person-first" language, enabling a shift away from more generic terms that offer a sense of inferiority like “marginalized” and “minority.”

The choice to offer children's picture books that highlight BIPOC main characters reflects a desire to provide access to stories that illuminate the specific lived experiences of young readers that identify as, but not limited to, Black, African, Caribbean, Native American, Latino/a, Asian and Pacific Islander.

Representation, Life Lessons & Your Lived Experiences
All In One Place
100% of Parents Want Their Children to
Feel Seen, Represented
and Valued
in the Picture Books They Read With Their Children
According to the Brookings Institution, there is a greater percentage of people under the age of 15 that identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) than white, however, this diversity is not always reflected in children's picture books. In fact, books about white children, animals and inanimate objects represent nearly 75% of children's and young adult books published in 2019.
Living in a reality where "traditional" picture book characters do not look like the BIPOC reader and encounter situations that do not represent the BIPOC lived experience can be frustrating and disheartening, leaving young readers and parents alike feeling unseen and under-valued.
